Late to the Party! A Power Rangers #1 Review

HELLOOOOOOOOOOOO TOKUSATSU FANDOM!

Yes, I know it’s been a hot minute since I’ve shown this sultry text to your adorkable eyeballs, but there’s a perfectly good explanation for that. (hue hue)

Anyway, I’ve finally gotten around to reading Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers #1 from Boom! Studios, and I have to say that this is some really top-notch stuff I’m reading. I’m fresh off of reading through this issue, and there are a number of things that are simmering on my mind.

The first thing that comes to mind is the standard cover.

STK699232

I mean LOOK AT THIS! This cover art (by Jamal Campbell) puts our heroes in a situation that the show in its current form could never give us, and that’s OVERWHELMING ODDS and VISUALLY DYNAMIC ANGLES. These alone put this cover at the top of my list. Add to that the vibrant colors and that one putty at the bottom whose face just screams “I regret every decision I’ve made up until this very moment”, and you have a contender.

Next up: The content. The meat and potatoes. At the beginning of the issue, you have Bulk and Skull, who are poised in this series as vloggers, hosts of Ranger Station (Hi, Comics Alliance!). They serve as our gateway to the world, introducing us to other characters and the overall premise of the issue, and next as a segway into Tommy and his internal struggle with his self-worth and worthiness to be a Power Ranger.

To see this side of Tommy was, again, something that we didn’t see an awful lot of during his stint as the Green Ranger back in MMPR. So to see him struggling with these rather human issues opens me up a bit more to the character.

Overall, I enjoyed this issue and I hope to see quality like this continue. I’d like to think that this could possibly be a Renaissance of sorts for Power Rangers comics. We’ll see.

2015: The Monkieverse Awakens

DJMonkieRanger Evolution 2015

HELLOOOOOOOOOOOO, TOKUSATSU FANDOM!

This year has been a heck of a ride. With another year under our belts, The Monkie Grid has been able to keep afloat. Not without the help of you, our readers and listeners, of course.

This year started out well and turned into a temultuous mess, to say the least. I lost my job due to workplace closure, panicked, found a new job, learned…and grew. There came a moment when I thought it best to remove myself from the fandom eye and essentially close The Monkie Grid and stop podcasting.

I learned that this was not the answer and came back. I grew to understand that not all of you would come back, and those of you who stayed have made the learning process very educational. And I thank you for that.

Anyway, enough about me. The Monkie Grid hasn’t seen much activity since my comeback, and I apologize for that. 2016 will see a slew of new content along with #DJMonkieRanger. I think you’ll like it!

For your enjoyment, I’ve included a playlist of the introductional and promotional antics of #DJMonkieRanger in 2015!

See you in 2016!

Dacre Montgomery is pretty much an unknown. His credits include a pilot trailer and a short film. Which means that our soon-to-be fearless leader is fresh, and quite possibly just what the property needs.

Dacre joins Pink Ranger Naomi Scott in Power Rangers, coming 2017!

Part of a new initiative to include Kamen Rider news in our feed!

Now I’ve never been keen on this whole “Sub War” thing regarding whether TV-Nihon or Over-Time, I just like a good quality sub that provides clear, readable subtitles that allow me to understand what I’m watching to suppliment the enjoyment of a good toku.

As such, TV-Nihon has released the Kamen Rider 4 3-episode special, which suppliments the movie Super Hero Taisen 3: Kamen Rider Grand Prix.
